Saturday, May 5th from 9:00 am-3:00 pm Wayne County Community College, Downriver location 21000 Northline Road, Taylor Bless Fest is a free community event which offers a health fair, job fair, financial services, groceries and a kid's zone for children (K-5th grade). The focus of this event is to help meet the needs of the downriver community. The Information Center will be participating by presenting "Where to Turn" Workshops and hosting an information table. The event is free and open to the public. The Information Center accepted a Diana C. Jones, honorable mention certificate which recognizes organizations for extraordinary volunteer community service work which benefits older adults. National Women's Health Week was celebrated at West Grange Pharmacy in Trenton, Saturday, May 14th from 10 am - 4 pm. Thanks to everyone who participated in Wayne Metro's Walk for Warmth! Mending the Safety Net 2011 was a big success! Over 50 vendors exhibited this year and each table was loaded down with information and goodies for all who attended! Information Center volunteer, Edith Deegan of Grosse Ile received a Claude Pepper honorable mention certificate for her individual efforts and work with the senior community. The awards were presented at the Blue Cross Blue Shield 2011 Community Service Awards ceremony Saturday, June 25th, Hines Park, Dearborn Heights. In addition, The Information Center accepted a Diana C. Photo credit: Wayne Vannice Bless Fest May 2011 The Information Center hosted a table and workshop at Bless Fest 2011, Saturday, May 21st from 10am until 2 pm.Over 1,000 people attended Bless Fest at Wayne County Community College in Taylor. Downriver Churches, businesses and organizations partnered for this event to provide complimentary health screenings, financial services, job fair and free groceries to attendees. Bless Fest 2011 was a huge success in meeting the needs of those in the downriver community. Photo credit: Wayne Vannice West Grange Women's Health Expo 2011 National Women's Health Week was celebrated at West Grange Pharmacy in Trenton, Saturday, May 14th from10 am - 4 pm. It was a week-long event which included many downriver health partners;Downriver Family YMCA, Southgate,Oakwood Hospital-Karen Colina Wilson Breast Care Center, Castleman Eye Center, Southgate Surgery Center, Henry Ford-Wyandotte Josephine Ford Cancer Center and The Guidance Center. The Information Center hosted a booth and provided a speaker for the event. Topics addressed included: Vision Care, Diet Nutrition, Breast Health, Heart Health, Mental Health, Specialized Surgery and Care giving. Jill Caruso, Ms. Wheelchair Michigan 1987 spoke about overcoming obstacles. Trenton Fire brought their new ladder truck to entertain the kids and worked along side West Grange promoting the "Yellow Jug Campaign." The Information Center participated for the first time with thirteen "Info on the Go!" members. It was an early morning walk around Westland Mall but the 3 K stroll was worth it as we had a great time raising funds to heat the homes of our neighbors! WALK FOR WARMTH INFO ON THE GO! The Healthy Downriver Community Team, a local community collaborative initiative, once again presented an exciting resource sharing event designed to provide up-to-date information about the ever-changing resources available to our community. Trivia Nights are held at 6:30 PM at the Westfield Community Center. The community center is located at 2700 Westfield Rd., Trenton, MI. Call our office at (734) 282-7171 for any of our upcoming Trivia Nights. Each event helps support a great local group! The challenge begins when trivia questions are projected on a wall and 8-member teams try to come to a consensus on the answer in 30 seconds or less. With over 80 questions presented at each event, you're sure to be both entertained and stumped. Lori Stevenson coordinated the program for the 13th year. This program matches families with community donors for extra assistance during the holiday season. Monday, December 13th, clients picked up Christmas gifts at PNC bank in Southgate.   Photo credit: Wayne Vannice The Adopt-a-Family program is supported by private donations, churches and local businesses. This seasonal program has been widely successful over the last 30 years due to generous community donations. The Giving Tree Benefit West Grange Pharmacy in Trenton celebrated their Holiday Open House with a benefit for The Information Center, November 14th. The event featured a Giving Tree for local families in need. Customers were encouraged to "fill up the tree, for those in need." The event was successful inside and outside the store. Entertainment was provided by some of Detroit's finest bands, "Curtice Markley", "Auroras of Autumn" and "Category 5."
